1/7/2012 - You are Lucky; How so or not so?

I am not sure how much I believe in luck - I tend to think that everything happens for a reason. But yes I know that I am lucky/blessed/fortunate etc as well as all you others on this blog. I read a stat yesterday that really put it in perspective for me: an individual with an after-tax salary of just $34,000 per year ranks among the richest one percent in the world; half of the world's richest 1% are Americans. Not that money is everything but to live in one of the richest countries means access to healthcare, food, affordable housing and a higher quality of life.

So to be born in this country, to have the job I have, the friends I have, the family, the life (the list goes on) I would say that I am pretty darn lucky.

  1. I must say, I have definitely had my share of bad luck. Not sure if luck is what you would call it, or if it is God's way of putting sittuations in my life to somehow make me a better person. Don't know if I know the answer to that now, or ever will. I do, however consider myself very lucky to have what I have momentarily. My health, my family, friendships, a roof over my head, etc. Having unlucky (unfortunate) situations occur in my life has shown me that nothing is a given, nothing is forever. I have learned to cherish what I have, because I may not have it forever. Whether it be my home, a relationship or my health. Part of my mission is to be a better person. I am learning to listen to my inner self and take in the world around me, learn lessons and see the significance in things. I hope to not see things as being unlucky, but rather to accept how those unlucky situations can change my life for the better in a significant way.

  2. Great stuff! I do consider myself lucky in that I have a great family, wonderful friends, a job that doesn't make me cringe and suitable housing! Once I find that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow...then I will be real lucky! I do believe we can make our own luck, choosing certain paths and the way you make decisions can really determine how your "luck" will turn out. I am going to try and make my own luck this year...smarter more thoughtful decisions!

  5. I feel like I am very lucky with the life I have been given.
Minus the fact that my sister and I have the flu together, while Kate and John are not sick, and Matt is in Vegas. Oh and my mom has the flu too. How I wish my parents lived in Seal Bech at this moment. Being sick is one thing, but being sick with children, yikes. Another reason moms are amazing.

  6. I don't know if I believe in luck either, I think when good things happen its a blessing and when bad things happen, they happen for a reason - whether its to make you stronger or make you learn something I don't know.
I know that I have blessed just by looking at my family, my friends, my house, my job, my boyfriend - so many things.
I'm glad we are doing this bc otherwise I would rarely look back and recognize how blessed I am.
